TPO ROOFING

What Is TPO?

Thermoplastic Polyolefin or TPO, as popularly referred to in the roofing industry, is a single-ply membrane made from numerous synthetic constituents coupled with a reinforcing scrim specially made to stabilize, strengthen and enhance the membrane’s performance. TPO formulations can be made up of several types of rubber, but the most used combination is polypropylene and ethylene-propylene.

TPO roofs have increasingly gained traction for usage on commercial roofs, especially those that have flat roofs. The material used for making TPO roofs provides desirable roof cover because of its UV light-reflecting features, which can go a long way in lowering the amount of money you spend on energy bills.

You can buy TPO membranes in sheet form, and are available in widths ranging from 10 to 20 feet. The manufacturer assembles, cuts, and rolls the sheets for dispatch to contractors who have made an order for the commercial roofing project(s) they may be undertaking.

Is TPO right for my roof?

With each passing month, the popularity of using TPO as a roofing material is gaining momentum. Experts in the industry forecast that it will be the premier roofing choice in the near future. The material has several properties that make it perfect for commercial roofing, including deflecting ultraviolet waves (UV) and its high resistance.

The color of most traditional roofing materials is black, meaning they absorb heat from the sun, which forces HVAC units to use more power to keep the establishment cool. Conversely, TPO roofs reflect UV rays, which means that commercial AC units use less fuel, resulting in improved energy efficiency.

You’ll find that TPO roofing systems are less prone to punctures. In contrast to standard roofs, TPO is about three times resilient to punctures. When your roof has punctures, it means water can gain entry into your building whenever it rains.

Some welding work is needed when installing TPO roofing systems. Welding will help the roof to be extremely durable, but it will make the installation process more complicated since an electrical source will be needed. The good news is that majority of reputable roofing companies have their generators. Likewise, any repair work needs on a TPO roof can be challenging since a high power electrical source is required.

How long does TPO last?

Lately, the synthetic components used for manufacturing TPO roofing materials have altered. Hence there’s no sufficient data that can definitively say the duration a TPO roofing system will last. General estimations suggest that the service life will range from 636-515-7692 years, depending on the kind of TPO installed. Laminating the outer layer of the TPO will help increase the lifespan and durability.

Will a TPO roof save me money?

The TPO roofing material that’s prevalently installed is bright white in color and is highly reflective. If you go for a similar type, you’ll save money when it comes to your energy bills during the summer and spring months. The white surface will reflect rays from sunlight, which will allow air conditioners to run efficiently.

For decades now, single-ply membrane roofs have been the premier choice for industrial and commercial buildings. We at Contemporary Roofing, Take pride in what we do. We show that by installing cost-effective and sustainable roofing solutions for all industrial, municipal, manufacturing, and commercial facilities. TPO roofs are a single ply roofing membrane that is that is energy efficient, easy to install, durable and is an extremely affordable commercial roofing option in St Louis.

EPDM is known for its UV and heat resistance and PVC is known for its weldability. Why would you choose between the two when TPO roof’s offer both advantages?

What are the advantages of a TPO Roof system? Well, we are glad you asked, below are some key benefits you will receive when choosing a TPO Roofing System:

Economical: The reasonable cost of TPO roofing seems like a no brainer. You still receive all the benefits of the other roofs, plus some, for a lower price. You get the benefits of other roofs put together in one for a more affordable roof price.

Durable: Unlike other thermoplastic membranes, TPO roof’s resist mold, dirt, impact tears and punctures. Its flexibility allows for the settling on homes or buildings (Commercial and Residential). Fits Various Home Styles: TPO roofing systems are not just for commercial roof’s, it can look great on your residential roof as well. TPO roof’s can be put on homes of all shapes and sizes. It comes in white, light grey, black and any of Sherwin William’s paint color’s. Any color you choose to use with the latest roofing technology that allows the roofing membrane to be UV resistant.

Ease Of Installation: If TPO roof’s have all of these great benefits why is it cheaper than the other choices of commercial roofing in St Louis? Sound too good to be true? The answer is easy, TPO roof membranes are made with wider, lighter sheets. This makes the material easier to work with and makes less seams which means less labor. The material and process make the roof project easier and faster for the installer, which turns to a direct savings for you!

Energy Efficient: TPO roof’s allow you to reduce your carbon footprint and benefit from heating and cooling costs. TPO roof membranes white reflective surface exceeds EPA’s Energy Star requirements. While TPO roofs have many advantages over the other types of flat roofs it is the rookie to the roof game which may be its biggest disadvantage for the roofing industry. Below are some disadvantages that you may want to consider before choosing a TPO Roof System:

Arguable Longevity: TPO roofs have only been around for 10 – 15 years and manufactures are still doing research to find a formula for the most durable and long-lasting roof product while remaining cost effective for the end consumer. With TPO only being 10 – 15 years old, it is hard to say if the product will hold up as long as they expect it to. Working with a credible roofer is incredibly important to ensure that they stay up to date on the newest and most durable roofing materials.

Does not stand up well to excessive heat: TPO roofing membranes have been noted to have some problems under extreme heat conditions. These problems have been specifically documented in the Southern states that receive a lot of sun and heat through out the year. There are two types of TPO roofs, Normal which can withstand up to 160 degrees and extreme which can withstand up to 190 degrees. Be sure to talk to your roofer to decide which would be the best choice for you.

There are many more pros than cons when considering a TPO roof, but it is important to consider both. Make sure to talk to your roofer and ask questions to ensure that you are making the right decision for your roof at your home or business whether its residential or commercial roofing project in St Louis.

What is a silicone coating?
An SRM or Silicone Restoration Membrane is a silicone-based protective coating applied to pre-existing roofing systems to increase its lifespan. It’s more of a fluid foam that can be rolled or sprayed directly on the roof's surface to fill in blisters, seams, and blisters.

Building owners invest in having their roofs coated with silicone even though their roofs are in good shape to restore the roofing system a bit and reduce any signs of wear and tear that has occurred over time.

Remember that a silicone coating doesn’t boost the roof's structural integrity, nor does it play a hand in improving the roof's insulation properties. However, it offers extra protection from external elements, thereby prolonging the service life.

Is a silicone coating right for my roofing system?
The silicone coating is increasingly becoming the premier option for flat roofs. It provides many advantages, including increased sustainability, enhanced aesthetic appeal, and improved leak protection. Generally, a silicone coating is used to enhance the performance of the roofing system over time. Silicone coated roofs are very sustainable. If you get your roof silicone-coated, it means that the next time you’ll need a recoating done will be after a decade or two because the coating extends the lifespan significantly. However, before the application of the silicone coating, your roof will need to be in tip-top condition.

How will a silicone coating benefit me?
Applying a silicone coating offers a range of benefits. It contains properties other coating elements don’t have. To begin with, it is entirely waterproof -- unlike acrylic, which is a water-based coating, the silicone coating is impermeable to moisture. Although you can improve the acrylic coating’s water-resistant properties by using fabric reinforcements, when it comes to water resistance, they aren’t on the same level as silicon coatings.

The second advantage of using silicone coating is how it doesn’t chalk off -- a prevalent problem with other coating materials. Silicone doesn’t shed particles over time. Rather, it stays fully intact for the entire service life. The third advantage of using silicone coatings is that you won’t need extra fabric for reinforcement reasons. Because of this, costs and installation times are greatly minimized. The final major advantage of using a silicone coating is that less material is required compared to other flat roofing systems.

How long does a silicone coating last?  TA silicone coating that has been professionally applied can have a service life of more than 20 years. Proper maintenance is done yearly, and roof inspections are carried out after extreme weather conditions.

EPDM ROOFING

What is EPDM?
EPDM is an extremely durable covering made from synthetic rubber membrane. It has widely received popularity on buildings that have low-slope roofs in America and abroad. EPDM's two major constituents are propylene and ethylene, which come from natural gas and crude oil. You can find the material in either white or black and sold in sheets with different widths of up to 50 feet. The thickness options available are 45 mils or 60 mils. In the case of a roofing installation, EPDM can be ballasted, adhered, or mechanically attached to the commercial building. The seams are then sealed with specially formulated liquid adhesives or tape.

Is EPDM right for my roof?
EPDM is much better suited for low sloping roofs, making it a popular choice for industrial facilities and commercial buildings, as well as car ports and patio roofs. The biggest advantage of using rubber-based roofing systems is its cost-effective cost.

How long will EPDM last?
The service life of an EPDM roofing system is quite impressive. Needing only minor maintenance, a standard EPDM covering can last half a century or even longer. New rubber formulations suggest newer EPDM roofs are virtually impregnable to UV radiation damage.

Will EPDM save me money?  An EPDM roof’s energy efficiency rating is pretty good, particularly if you select the white color. Considering how an EPDM roofing system reflects the sun’s heat rays, building owners make considerable savings when it comes to air cooling costs. Additionally, EPDM has excellent insulating features, which can reduce the heating bills of a building during the cold seasons. EPDM rubber roofing does not fall susceptible to wilting when the weather is hot, nor does it crack and freeze in cold seasons, since contemporary formulations are specially made to withstand extreme temperature.

ASPHALT SHINGLES

What are asphalt shingles?
Asphalt shingles covering consists of several individual overlapping elements. The single elements come in varying shapes, but the shape commonly used is rectangular and flat. From the bottom, they are arranged in rows as they go up with every individual row overlapping the joints below. You can find them in 3-tab and architectural designs.

Are asphalt shingles right for my roof?
For the asphalt shingle cover to be ideal, your roof has to have a sloping angle of at least nine degrees. The technical run requirement or minimum rise is 2/12, meaning that there shouldn’t be over 12 units of horizontal run for every two units of vertical rise.

How long do asphalt shingles last?
If you want to know the service life, finding out how long ago it was installed and the materials used will help you work out a figure. For instance, a traditional asphalt shingle roofing system can last for over three decades before requiring a complete replacement. In the meantime, a roofing system installed over an existing asphalt shingles layer will need replacement in 20 years.

Replacing Your Roof With Insurance

Google Review

This company came out and painted the exterior of my house this past July. The price was what I was expecting to pay. The quality of work was far above par. They pressure washed, scraped, caulked, sprayed and back-rolled the paint into the wood and then brushed it into the nooks and crevices. My cedar siding looks completely refreshed, renewed, and protected. They took their time. I'm kind of a nag. I'll call a company back to fix a job if its not right. I did not find one pinhole that they missed.

Dustin and his team were extremely professional, time efficient, and did great work! They were able to provide me an estimate quickly and get the work started and finished within a week. Additionally, Dustin provided us with advice on other projects around the house and was extremely generous, offering time and services beyond you would expect (helping remove large trash items from the home, sharing products, offering to lend us power washer). We are so glad we used Contemporary and will 100% hire them again!
